pUSHING THE LIMITS
Drones were always intended for proactive people. The ones who want to have fun. Who wants to explore. Soar higher and fly further. The recent breakthroughs in radio and FPV areas are finally making these wishes a reality, pushing the limits of what can be achieved with each passing day. However, there will always be some limits. Here are my best tips for long distance flights.
Turn on Sport Mode
Before you take off, make sure that you are flying in Sport Mode with the DJI Mavic Pro. The sensors will drain the battery, sure, but the real enemy is speed. With the Obstacle Avoidance turned on, the DJI Mavic Pro would max out at about 20mph. Users report that flying in the ballpark of 26mph is the most efficient use of your battery life. To turn on Sport Mode, just flip the little switch on the right grip that says “Sport.” You can also try out an app called Litchi, which will allow you to set a constant flight speed.
Check your line of sight
The last thing that you want on a long-range flight is a sudden loss of connection. That’s why it is important to minimize the objects that could interrupt a line-of-sight connection between the controller and the Mavic Pro. The signal is strong enough to overcome some interference, but that doesn’t mean you should rely on it to power through. If you already have physical obstructions, then a bit of unexpected radio interference could end up being the straw that broke the Mavic’s back. There’s a reason all of the long-range YouTube videos are shot over farms and fields.
Stay Around 400ft (Or Your Legal Limit)
Every country and region has its own restrictions, but the goal is to push right up against them. By staying high, you minimize the physical obstacles that could block your flight. More than that, you also keep the drone away from power lines, home wifi, satellite dishes, and a thousand other electronic devices that contribute to signal interference. This helps ensure a clean and clear flight, free from complications.
